If you are captivated by millinery and would like to apply to HNC/D Millinery @morleycollege OPEN DAY will be on 29th March 5-7pm at Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries, Hortensia Road, London SW10 0QS
The HNC/D in Millinery has been training industry-leading milliners for 20 years. Indeed, many BHG members who are top people within the industry today have learnt their trade at former KCC, now Morley College.
The HNC/D in Millinery is a unique course that trains its students in all areas of millinery (film and theatre millinery, commercial design, and couture fashion). It will give students the skills to join a professional workroom, start their own business, or progress to MA-level courses at leading fashion colleges. Due to HNC/D Millinery’s high standards of design and craftsmanship, it is highly regarded for its millinery craft internationally.

Today we asked BHG member Jess Collett @jesscollettmilliner few questions about her millinery journey.
What Year did you graduate at KCC/Morley? 1997
What were highlights of the course for you? How did it help you in your millinery career?
Going to KCC as it was then called, was the best kind of training I could have received for starting my own hat business. Having done a 2-year work experience with Milliner Edwina Ibbotson, although I knew how to sew and block and make flowers, the teachers and the course gave me the freedom to discover and experiment within a guiding and encouraging environment. We learnt about the Hat Trade in Luton and were introduced to suppliers and how the industry worked. We learnt how to create collections and became aware of all aspects of running a business and things we had to think about in this field. It was a creative arena where students could learn from each other, discuss new ideas and experiment. All hugely valuable.
What are your career highlights now?
I have my own atelier in Notting Hill and have survived covid! I have made hats and currently still make for members of the Royal family over the years. I have an online business; I work with couturiers and make hats for fashion shows.

Today we asked BHG member Jo Miller @jomillerstudio few questions about her millinery journey.
What Year did you graduate from the HNC/D at KCC/Morley? 2012
What were highlights of the course for you?
I studied the HNC to retrain in millinery from a background in Fine Art. I wanted an accredited course and to study millinery beyond short/hobby/specific craft skill courses. The year on the HNC gave me a good foundation in millinery from which I started my journey and career path. The year I completed the HNC I went on to study millinery further at The Royal College of Art with a MA in Fashion Womenswear specialising in Millinery. The portfolio and work I credited on The HNC was undoubtedly the reason why I was accepted on the MA at RCA
What are your career highlights now?
After RCA I went on to work for Stephen Jones in his model department for 3 years and spent 2 years as resident milliner at Sarabande set up by the Lee Alexander McQueen foundation.
I now run my own label and design studio and have high profile clients such as Beyonce and Erykah Badu.
Are you working for well-known theatre/film/designers etc?
I have consulted and collaborated with designers such as A-Cold-Wall and Maison Margiela. I currently work regularly with award winning stylist Patti Wilson

Today we asked BHG member Rachel Richardson @rachjenrich few questions about her millinery journey.

What Year did you graduate from the HNC/D at KCC/Morley? 2005
What were highlights of the course for you? How did it help you in your millinery career?
I had completed the City and Guilds in the evening course before I started the HNC. Before this I had no millinery experience, so it taught me everything!
During the HNC a UK supplier offered me a work placement (2 weeks in China, 2 weeks in their offices) which directly resulted in a full-time job and ultimately my career (which I still have now)
What are your career highlights now?
There are many, however I have been lucky enough to travel extensively with work, visiting China up to 6 times a year as well as multiple trips to NY, Tokyo, Seoul and Europe. I have seen my designs in multiple UK high street stores
Are you working for well-known theatre/film/designers etc?
At present I am freelance, designing for customers such as Accessorize, esprit, M&S. Previously I have designed for Debenhams, including the designers at Debenhams - Jasper Conran, Jenny Packham and Julien McDonald.

Today we asked BHG member Rafa Peinador @rafa_peinador few questions about his millinery journey.
What Year did you graduate from the HNC/D at KCC/Morley? 2018/19
What were highlights of the course for you? How did it help you in your millinery career? Many amazing things happened during the course. Being taught by experienced milliners, master classes, visits to milliners’ studios, selling hats in Fenwick, but my highlights of the course will be the exhibition with the end of the year collection and Longines competition for Ascot. Apart of teaching you how to create a collection from concept to final piece, helping you creatively and technically. You can exhibit it, giving you the opportunity to reach and showcase your work to the millinery world and to possible buyers.
What are your career highlights now?
The fashion shows, in my opinion there is no better way to showcase your work than the catwalks. Fashion designers in general allow you to create amazing pieces full of creativity and fun. There is nothing better than the adrenalin rush just seconds before the show starts, and the proud moment when you see your piece on a professional model.
Are you working for well-known theatre/film/designers etc. Apart of working for Stephen Jones for the last 4 years, I design and makehats for Brain & Beast, Guillermo Decimo and Lina.

Posted @withregram • @morley_college Our milline Posted @withregram • @morley_college Our millinery students at our Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries are working with buyers from the prestigious department store @fenwickofficial, located on Bond Street, London.

The students are currently working on designing hats for all summer occasions and their creations will be sold in the millinery department at Fenwick's ahead of Royal Ascot.

This is a huge privilege for the students, giving them an introduction to the world of professional millinery and allowing them to learn from one of the UK’s leading millinery buyers.

Congratulations to all the students and Vesna Persic, tutor in millinery at Morley College London.

What Year did you graduate from the HNC/D at KCC/Morley? HNC 2007
What were highlights of the course for you? How did it help you in your millinery career?
The breath of the course and the understanding of the tutors. While on the HNC, I won the Feltmakers’ Design Award, leading to an internship with Rachel Trevor Morgan. Without the HNC, I would not have progressed onto the MA at the RCA. The HNC provided an understanding headwear construction (and the industry more broadly) that provided a solid foundation to technique and design while on the masters course. The course also created a community of emerging designers who provided friendship and support, which is very much appreciated where studio life involves a lot of time working alone.
What are your career highlights now?
Creating Haute Couture pieces for Yiqing Yin
Exhibition with Unveiled at London Craft Week
BFC Newgen Accessories
BFC Headonism
Exhibiting at Premiere Classe, Paris
